San Andrés Island was declared “Monumento Natural” in 2003. Actually it´s a group of two island (“big island” and “little island” )with an extension of 1,5 hectares, opposite Carboneras and 400 metres from the coast. It´s a quiet assessment for seagulls, cormorants, charades and terns.
It has a volcanic appearance because of its origin, in the surface and in its fonds, where there is an extinguished little volcanic crater and numerous fissures and caves that shelter long “ oceanic poseidona” meadows and an important sea fauna as moors, ´castañuelas´,´ doncellas´, morns, surges, congruous,etc. A magnificent place to invertebrates observation: Gorgonias, anemones, nudibranquios , ascidias , etc. All this, plus the little existence of water running in the immersion spots and depths from 5 to 32m. converter this 'Monumento Natural' in a wonderful spot for scuba diving any level you have.
San Andrés Island
West side: 10 to 25 meters depth, “posidonia oceánica” extensions and ins and outs , corridor s and big fissures. Salpas, sargos, serránidos, nacras, octopus,etc. Night immersions.
North side: Short depth, special for beginners, from 3 to 12 mts. Little caves and passages. Also known as “ Los Cañones” o “El Acuario”
East Side : From 10 to 14 mts, corridors, fissures, etc.
El Cráter, El Motor and Las Gorgonias
West side, 20 to 40 m from the island, there is a rock formation looking like a mountain-volcanus. We go down inside the crater (5 m depth) to 14-19 meters, where we can see the walls colonized by numerous invertebrates and also “golden bottons”. Spectacular panoramic from the crater fonds to the surface, as well as the inferior exit across a big arc wich fissures are occupied by morenas,.. South side, a wall descend to 31 m., and at 26 m. there,s ” the Motor “ of an English plane fallen down to sea in the 40´s. South wall take us to 32 meters, and at 22 meters we find
Las Gorgonias, with anemones, octopus, etc.
Corvinas Cave
From 14 to 18 m., sand grounds surrounded by rocky walls 2-5 meters high. Corvinas, sargos, etc banks
Roldan Table
Maxim immersion of 12 m. depth, across a cannon colonized by colours sponges. We reach holes, spectacular fauna, barracudas, moon fish,.. Also interesting for beginners.
El Plomo
In front of the little beach with the same name. 20 to 30 meters depth.
